This has resulted in new technologies for cement production. Worldwide, therefore, twin-shaft batch mixers are becoming more important for high-quality cement production. They introduce very high turbulence into the mix and achieve about 95% homogeneity at only around 30 seconds mixing time per batch.

Read the full article at buzzle.

What is a Cement Mixer?

A cement mixer is a device that homogeneously combines cement, aggregate such as sand or gravel, and water to form cement. A powered device that mixes cement with water and aggregate, such as sand or pea gravel, to make cement. Cement mixers range from the very large commercial mixing truck to the smaller, portable cement mixer sometimes called a mini mixer. A cement mixer is comprised primarily of a motor, a rotating drum, and often a chute. Inside the drum, the materials used to make cement spin around, mixing together evenly and remaining soft for application and forming.

Read the full article at article depot.

Different Uses for a Tile Saw

A wet tile saw cuts tiles made of ceramic, leaving a clean, smooth edge. A tile setter needs to trim tiles at the installation site to fit the edges of a room or create inventive designs. A table-mounted, portable wet tile saw allows her to cut tile as they are needed to exact specifications. The saw combines a circular blade, similar to a wood table saw, with a water pump and hose to constantly drench the cutting area with water to reduce friction and cool the surface.

Since tiles are so thick, brittle, and made of ceramic, a special saw must be used. An ordinary circular saw for wood or metal would either break the tile or get so hot that it would seize up and stop cutting. However, ceramic tile is not cut well with sharp blades. The wet tile saw was invented to address all these unique properties of ceramic. It doesn't overheat, uses a relatively dull blade with no serrations, and can be transported to a job site and set up on top of an existing table or sawhorses.
See the full article at Searchwarp.

XG Power at Yahoo

Find information on construction equipment at the Yahoo Business Directory.

Electric Generator and Power Generator Safety Tips

When buying a diesel generator make a list of the lights and equipment that will be running off the generator. Total the wattage requirements to determine the capacity of the generator. Compare wattage requirement and the price of the generator. If the generator is to be connected directly to the electrical system, then it is advisable to hire a qualified technician to install the transfer switch. Ensure that the generator has adequate storage capacity, longer usage time at a stretch, overload protection and auto shut off facility.

Portable generators are critical to have in emergencies or for use in areas where there is no traditional electricity. Always keep in mind there are safety issues related to the proper use of the generators. Portable generators can cause electrocution if they are left in the rain or sitting in water. Keep the generator under a canopy where it is protected, but not totally enclosed. It must still have adequate ventilation. Never touch the generator when you are standing in water or your hands are wet. Never run extension cords through water of any kind. Keep all unauthorized people away from the unit while it is operating.

Make sure all extension cords are of high enough rating for whatever load they are to carry. Also check for fraying, exposed wires or areas where the cord may be underneath something else and is hard to see. Many people will put cords under rugs or furniture, but this can harm the cord and hide any defects in the cord.

Check cords when the portable generator is operating to make sure they are not overheating. Overheating is an indication of too much load for the cord or else damaged wires inside the cord. Even though the cords may be rated for the load you have, if compressors are turning on and off, the load may be temporarily increasing beyond the rating.

Even with the best alternative system such as solar energy or wind energy, sometimes the weather may not cooperate and land us in darkness when the main power source fails. To keep our power system running, a backup engine generator may be just the thing. For businesses with sensitive computer networks, or homes with critical medical equipment, a back up power system such as a diesel generator may be necessary even when grid power is available.

When buying a diesel generator make a list of the lights and equipment that will be running off the generator. A normal 60-watt incandescent light bulb requires, as you would expect, 60 watts, and it requires that wattage both when you turn it on and while it is running. A ceiling fan motor, on the other hand, might require 150 watts to get it started and 75 watts while it is running. That extra wattage to start the motor is called the surge wattage and is typical of anything that contains an electric motor. Here are the usual wattages of some of the devices found in a typical household:

  <table class="MsoNormalTable" style="background: lightyellow none repeat scroll 0%;

Surge Wattage

15,000 watts

30,000 watts surge

One thing you can see from this chart is that the heat pump or air conditioner for an entire house has a huge appetite for power. If your house has a heat pump and you want to be able to keep the house warm during a power failure in the winter, then you will either need to purchase a very large generator (which costs a whole lot) or you will need a backup heat source, such as wood or propane.

One other thing to note is that if you plan to operate sensitive equipment like TVs and computers from an emergency power supply, you will want to have in place excellent surge protection equipment and, in the case of a computer, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). When a large device like a refrigerator turns on, there is no way that a small generator will be able to keep power stable during the surge. A UPS will prevent your computer from crashing during the blip.

To calculate your power needs, you need to add up the normal and surge wattage figures for all of the devices you want to operate simultaneously. Here are two examples:

If you plan to operate a small TV and two 60-watt light bulbs, then you need an emergency power supply that has a capacity of at least 220 watts and a surge capacity of 270 watts. Rounding up, that's 250 watts continuous and 300 watts surge.

If you plan to operate your refrigerator, a color TV and a microwave simultaneously, you need 2,250 watts continuous and 3,800 watts surge in the worst case (if all three happen to turn on at exactly the same moment). If you are willing to manage your power a bit and make sure they do not all turn on at once, then your surge power requirement is only 2,400 watts. If you are willing to operate only one of these devices at a time, then, because your refrigerator is the largest power user, you need to size your emergency power system so it is large enough to handle the refrigerator.

The point made in the second example about staggering your power consumption is important. If you are willing to stagger your usage -- for example, running the refrigerator for an hour and then running the well pump, but never operating them together -- you can get by with a smaller generator.

Here is an example of a electric generator you can find at XG Power. This one is a 6700-watt Electric Generator 110 / 240 volt with electric start

Our generator packs plenty of power to run heavy-load equipment like heaters or air compressors. Auto decompression ensures easy starting. Dependable, maintenance-free ignition and brushless alternator. Large, super-quiet muffler. Black, tubular steel frame and easy-to-read fuel gauge. This super-fuel-efficient generator gets up to 11 hours of continuous operation on a tank of gas.

<span style="font-family: Arial; Total the wattage requirements to determine the capacity of the generator. Compare wattage requirement and the price of the generator. If the electric generator is to be connected directly to the electrical system, then it is advisable to hire a qualified technician to install the transfer switch.

Whether designing a patio or walkway, interlocking concrete pavers provide aesthetic beauty, functionality and durability for a project that will look great for years to come.

Step 1: Planning To begin, take some graph paper, a level and a garden hose, and start experimenting to determine the shape and size of the project area.

Step 2: Excavating Keeping in mind the needed slope, now is the time to decide the finished height of the project.

After excavating the site, compact the soil with a plate compactor to prepare the surface for the aggregate base. Remove any standing water, rocks or other protrusions. Any bump or depression at this or any level will become visible in the finished project.

Step 3: Laying the base If possible, use crushed rock for the base, the same material often used under roads. Typically, 4 inches of base will be adequate for a patio. Using the plate compactor compact the base in 3-inch layers using a mechanical plate compactor. For best results, work the plate compactor in a circular motion and go over all areas at least twice.

Step 4: Restraining the pavers Edge restraints hold the concrete pavers and the base in place. Without edge restraints, pavers can shift, and the base can erode. Restraints can be made of steel, aluminum, precast concrete or plastic. Secure plastic or metal edge restraints in place with 12-inch spikes. For projects with several curves, you can cut the edging to follow bends in the shape of the project.

Step 5: Setting the sand Sand is the final layer of the base for an interlocking concrete-paver system. For this layer, use coarse sand, such as the kind used to make concrete. Don't use limestone screenings or stone dust. When screeded smooth, the sand should be no thicker than 1.5 inches and perfectly smooth.

Step 6: Placing the pavers Now comes the simple part--actually laying the pavers in place. To keep pavers in line, you can use the height string as a guide for the pattern of the pavers. You may need to pull out and set additional strings to mark joint lines.

Gently fit pavers tightly together in the appropriate laying pattern (see Photo 4, at left). When necessary along the edges, cut the pavers with a masonry saw or mechanical splitter for a perfect fit. Lay all whole pavers in place before adding the cut pavers. Also, always wear safety glasses when using a masonry saw or mechanical splitter, as well as any other safety attire recommended by the equipment manufacturer.

After you set all pavers, use the plate compactor again to vibrate and set the pavers into the bedding sand (see Photo 5, below center). For the final step, sweep sand into the joints of the new patio, driveway or path, and compact the surface again, sweeping sand into them until the joints are full (see Photo 6, below). You can use the same coarse sand used for bedding the pavers, but finer sand will fill joints faster. But be careful what type of sand you use--sand that is too fine will not provide for sufficient interlock. Make sure any sand you use is completely dry so that it fills the cracks and provides the interlock that will keep all the pavers in place.

You can fid plate compactors at XG Power like this one. 18 x 24 Inch Plate Compactor with Subaru Robin 6 HP Engine

This XG Power single-direction plate compactor is designed to compact sand, gravel, grit, granular materials, segmental brick paving and hot and cold asphalt. Concrete mixers range from the very large commercial mixing truck to the smaller, portable concrete mixer sometimes called a mini mixer. A concrete mixer is comprised primarily of a motor, a rotating drum, and often a chute. Inside the drum, the materials used to make concrete spin around, mixing together evenly and remaining soft for application and forming.

Today's market increasingly requires consistent homogeneity and short mixing times for the industrial production of ready-mix concrete, and more so for precast/prestressed concrete. This has resulted in new technologies for concrete production. Worldwide, therefore, twin-shaft batch mixers are becoming more important for high-quality concrete production. They introduce very high turbulence into the mix and achieve about 95% homogeneity at only around 30 seconds mixing time per batch.

A large commercial concrete mixer truck is used for mixing and transporting large volumes of concrete for use on a building site. For smaller volumes of concrete, typically up to two cubic yards (1.83 cubic meters), a portable concrete mixer is sufficient. A portable concrete mixer is typically powered by electricity and sits on a base with wheels for easier transport. The rotating drum can be tilted down so that mixed concrete can be poured into a wheelbarrow.

A typical concrete mixer uses a revolving drum to mix the components. For smaller volume works portable concrete mixers are often used so that the concrete can be made at the construction site, giving the workers ample time to use the concrete before it hardens. An alternative to a machine is mixing concrete or concrete by hand. This is usually done in a wheelbarrow; however, several companies have recently begun to sell modified tarps for this purpose.

For homeowners attempting small concrete projects such as a patio, sidewalk repair, or small slab, a portable concrete mixer is essential to maximize efficiency. A concrete mixer does not keep concrete ready for application indefinitely, so it is important to have an understanding of how much concrete you can pour and finish within a specific time frame. Different types of concrete set faster than others, so check the manufacturer’s directions.

Larger projects, such as a driveway or basketball court, may require calling a commercial truck. Commercial concrete mixers require access to within a fairly close distance of the project. In-ground swimming pools are an example of a large-scale project requiring direct access by a truck.

Understand that calling a concrete company only secures delivery of the concrete. Pricing is a flat rate per cubic yard ordered and the truck will remain on site only for a specified period of time. Large projects may require professional concrete finishers to accomplish the task within the time frame provided. Before calling a concrete company, be sure to have finishers on site and ready to pour, and don’t forget to obtain any permits necessary in your area.

You can find a concrete mixer like this one at XG Power. XG Power 9 cubic foot Concrete Mixer with Subaru Robin 9HP Engine

This heavy duty concrete mixer has a large 12 cubic ft. drum volume with a 9 cubic foot mix capacity.

A manual tile cutter can be tedious when working with a larger quantity of tile. The manual model has a round cutter that rolls along the tile, scoring it as you push the handle downward. The kickstand pops up and pops the tile in two pieces as you apply pressure.

A motorized wet saw, however, features a diamond cutting blade and makes quick work of cutting tiles. The blade remains stationary as the tile moves through -- but the blade must stay wet. Because of this, a water pump pulls water from a reservoir and sends into across the blade before the water is recycled.

A motorized wet saw uses a diamond-cutting blade. The blade stays stationary while you move the tile through it. The blade needs to stay wet throughout the process. A water pump pulls water from the water pond below the blade and sends it across the blade. The water falls back into the pond and is recycled. The pond must be cleaned every so often to keep the system from becoming clogged. A carriage system moves the tile past the blade.
